Wait, so you can't be judged for saying it, but if anyone else says it ("it's just a word"), they get judged?

There are three major factors that play into if you can say a word that is commonly accepted as offensive to a group of people:

1. Are you in that group of people?

2. Have you experienced oppression/bullying more with that word or phrase more than anyone else in the room?

3. Are you in a situation where you will inspire other people to say it?  (Around children, pre-teens, etc.)

Basically, if you are not gay, you shouldn’t be saying it, but even if you are gay, you should not say it if someone has been tormented with that word, or if you might get your little brother to say it at school.

In my GSA, I’m the only gay guy, I’m the only one I know who has experienced significant homophobic bullying, and everyone is smart enough to know not to say it outside of that room (unless they follow the above checklist).
