Why me Hebrew class makes light of suicide and that’s not okay:
[TW: Suicide, Suicide jokes]
Let me add some info so you know the context… My Hebrew class is not taken seriously. No one is there to learn and the teacher knows that. People say everything that comes to their minds no matter how stupid it is or how much they shouldn’t say it. The teacher is Israeli and doesn’t speak perfect English, so she doesn’t really know what people say and probably wouldn’t be able to catch on to a sensitive issue like suicide when it is said in English.
With that said, today in Hebrew class I heard the phrase “Ugh I got the answer wrong I just want to kill myself.” Now, clearly this was said really sarcastically and in a whiney way. This person didn’t care in the slightest. He also says this a lot, but what was said after is what bothers me. Someone said “Well look *points to open window with no screen* why don’t you just jump already!”
I really thought this crossed the line from the watered down phrase “I want to kill myself” meaning “I’m somewhat sad but really just exaggerating x 1000” to actually making light of suicide by talking about doing it over getting a question wrong in class. This really is triggering for me and really needs to stop.
